When Should you go to ID Camps?

As a seasoned coach, I've walked through the rigors of college soccer recruiting more times than I can count. Every player's journey is unique, and the path to securing a spot on a college team isn't always straightforward. Attending ID camps, while potentially beneficial, isn't a mandatory stepping stone for every player. It comes with its own costs and commitment.

However, in my experience, there are two specific circumstances when missing out on an ID camp might cost you dearly.

1. When a Coach Has Personally Invited You

When should you go to ID Camps?

Receiving a personal invitation from a coach to attend an ID camp isn't a trivial matter. These invites are not dispensed thoughtlessly; they are indicative of a coach's interest in your potential to contribute to their team.

Let me share a personal experience. A few seasons ago, there was this promising player named Sam. I'd seen him playing in a local league and was interested in his skills and game sense. He had the potential to be a valuable addition to our squad. Consequently, I extended an invitation to him for our university's ID camp. Much to my surprise, Sam decided not to attend. I'm not privy to his reasons, but this decision came at a cost. His absence at the camp meant we couldn't assess his skills in a more competitive environment, which, in turn, led to him missing out on a potential scholarship offer.

Reflecting on Sam's decision, the practical implications became clear. By choosing not to attend, Sam missed a golden opportunity to stand out from the crowd. He could have taken advantage of the camp to showcase his skills, challenge himself against other talented players, and further demonstrate his abilities to me and my coaching staff. We needed to see how he could handle higher-level gameplay and how he integrated with potential future teammates. Without this critical data point, we had to move forward with other prospects. His absence from the camp consequently meant that he fell off our recruitment list.

2. You're a Rising Senior Without an Offer

When should you go to ID Camps?

As a rising senior, if you haven't yet secured an offer, it's time to step up and take action. This is when attending ID camps becomes an essential part of your strategy.

Take the story of Lisa, a player I coached a few years ago. Lisa was an exceptionally talented player, but by the beginning of her senior year, she hadn't received any college offers. Undeterred, she decided to attend multiple ID camps, putting her skills on display for several colleges, ours included. I still remember her relentless performance and the way she showcased her exceptional leadership skills. Her tenacity was impressive, and we ended up offering her a spot on our team. She seized the opportunity at the right time and turned her situation around.

According to a soccer legend, "Success is no accident. It is hard work, perseverance, learning, studying, sacrifice and most of all, love of what you are doing or learning to do." If you're a rising senior without an offer, attending an ID camp is an ideal way to demonstrate your commitment to the game and your willingness to learn and succeed.

Navigating the world of college soccer recruitment requires strategic planning and timing. While ID camps are not an absolute necessity for everyone, missing them in either of the above scenarios could close doors to opportunities.

As a potential college soccer player, your goal should be to seize control of your journey, showcasing your skills whenever possible. Remember, the road to success is paved with seized opportunities and well-timed decisions. So, when faced with the decision to attend an ID camp, weigh your options, consider your current circumstances, and make the best choice for your soccer career.
